Blakeney Harbour: opportunities for nature restoration

We’ve been working with partners including WWF, the National Trust and The Crown Estate to collect new environmental data and combine it with climate change modelling. Our goal was to explore opportunities for restoring and enhancing coastal habitats within Blakeney Harbour. This study builds on WWF’s 2024 research, which identified significant potential for habitat recovery in the Blakeney area.

This recent assessment focused on identifying the most promising areas for restoration across this dynamic and well-used harbour. Priority habitats included saltmarsh and shingle beach, while key species of interest were seagrass, European flat/native oysters, and common and blue mussels.

It’s important to note that this is not yet an active restoration project — our work so far has focused on exploring feasibility. This means that if restoration work moves forward, it will be effective, carefully planned and developed collaboratively with the local community.

For more information on the study’s findings and recommendations, please see our summary of the full report.

We’re also looking forward to continuing this conversation with the Blakeney community and neighbouring areas on 10 December, when we’ll use the report’s findings to help identify our next steps together. Join us at the event by registering here.
